FDNY Switches to the OHD Quantifit

The City of New York Fire Department (FDNY) has taken delivery of seven state-of-the-art OHD Quantifit fit testing machines. After several months of testing and analysis FDNY officials deemed it necessary to upgrade from their existing PortaCount fit testers to a machine with both proven effectiveness and efficiency.

The OHD Quantifit utilizes the patented negative pressure technology to offer users a 5 step OSHA approved protocol which can take as little as 2-3 minutes to complete. In addition to speed, the Quantifit has proven time and time again that it offers the most accurate and effective quantitative fit testing to end users. The Quantifit paired with the new FitTrack Gold Software is providing FDNY firefighters and EMS workers with the latest and greatest technology in quantitative fit testing.

Special thanks to Battalion Chief Bill Mundy for his commitment to providing the highest quality safety equipment.

Goldens Bridge Bullard Eclipse

Bullard Eclipse

The Goldens Bridge Fire Department has taken delivery of a Bullard Eclipse LD Thermal Imaging Camera. The Eclipse is the most cost effective thermal camera in the Bullard fleet in a compact and lightweight design. Goldens Bridge FD opted for several industry leading options including Color Temperature, High Resolution, and Thermal Throttle.

With the upgraded color temperature, colorization alerts firefighters to areas of intense heat. The upgraded high resolution offers firefighters a 320 x 240 resolution for crisp and clear images. And the thermal throttle isolates heat sources so that the firefighter can distinguish a heat source from the surrounding areas.

Best of luck to the leadership and firefighters of the Goldens Bridge FD on their latest investment.

Rye FD Ventis MX4

The Rye Fire Department has taken delivery of three Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 multi-gas meters along with the Calibration Station.

The Ventis MX4, which senses combustible gases, oxygen deficiency, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide, will provide readings and warnings to firefighters. Also, the new gas detectors will allow firefighters to evaluate carbon monoxide alarms in homes and buildings. Along with the meters, Rye FD has purchased a calibration station that allows them to recharge batteries, calibrate, and check the sensors in their meters on a timely basis in order to comply with all OSHA requirements.

Special thanks to Lt. Kurt Tietjen and FF John McDwyer for the effort they put into making the transition to the Ventis MX4.

NFPA 1971 & Bourke Shields

Changes to the 2013 Edition of NFPA 1971 have impacted the compliance of newly manufactured Cairns helmets with Bourke Shields. Any Cairns helmet manufactured after August 29, 2013 that includes a Bourke Shield will not be NFPA 1971, 2013 Edition compliant. Because NFPA 1971 compliance is based on ship date and not order or manufacture date, some leather helmet orders may be impacted.

Here’s what changed from 2007 to 2013 to bring this change. In 2007, not all components shipped attached to a fire helmet were subjected to the NFPA 1971 Heat & Thermal Shrinkage (HTS) test (500 degrees for 5 minutes in a convective oven). According to Section A7.4.4(8) of the 2013 edition of the standard, however, “any component that is attached to the helmet by the helmet manufacturer before shipment” is considered part of the helmet assembly and must therefore be subjected to the HTS test. It should not surprise the firefighting community that the current Bourke would fail such an extreme test, considering how many intentionally melt the Bourke to achieve that “seasoned” look.

For more details on how this may impact your current or future structural firefighter helmet order contact our main office or your regional sales representative.

New Jersey New Scott SCBA

Three fire departments in our New Jersey territory have recently completed Scott SCBA upgrades. First and foremost the Wallington NJ Fire Department has successfully completed a full conversion from Interspiro SCBA to Scott 4500 PSI Wireframe SCBA.

The transition for the Wallington Fire Department provides them with confidence in investing in the industry leading SCBA manufacturer. Including the time tested dual redundant pressure reducer, the 2007 Edition Wireframe SCBA provides Wallington Firefighters with all the necessary tools to protect life and property safely. Perhaps more importantly, the transition to Scott SCBA ensures uniformity with neighboring departments surrounding Wallington.

The North Arlington and Garfield fire departments have recently received upgraded SCBA from their existing Scott SCBA. All three fire departments now have such innovative features as the Pak Tracking Technology and Heads Up Display to ensure firefighter safety and awareness. Lastly, all three departments have invested in the superior fit and comfort of the Scott AV3000 facepiece. The AV3000 ensures firefighters have the best fit available to streamline the fit testing process and increase efficiency in air usage.

Congratulations to all three fire departments in their investments to work in protecting their communities and firefighters.

Ridgewood NJ FD Gear & Bailout

The Ridgewood NJ Fire Department, through a FEMA Grant, has taken delivery of new turnout gear and emergency escape, bailout systems for its entire department. The turnout gear is made up of the Globe G-Xcel line including the Globe IH II Internal Harness pants. The G-Xcel design includes a lightweight and flexible jacket which gives firefighters more overlap where it’s needed. In addition, the pants provide a low-rise style fit, for comfort where you need it, without sacrificing safety and overlap with the jacket.

Through AAA Emergency and RIT Safety Solutions, fire departments are able to pick and customize the bailout and emergency escape system they feel best fits their manpower, community, and existing equipment. After extensive research and internal testing, the Ridgewood FD leadership chose to invest in the RIT Lumbar Bailout System. The lumbar system offers the same great lightweight and compact Kevlar tubular webbing and the RIT FIRE AL 2 descent device available in the best-selling RIT Pocket Pack. However, the system slides into a hip sleeve, distributing the weight of the system throughout the body.

Special thanks to Chief James Van Goor and his committee in selecting this industry leading equipment. The standardized compliment of equipment will improve the safety and effectiveness of Ridgewood firefighters now and in the years to come.

Clifton, NJ FD SCBA

In 2002 AAA Emergency New Jersey Sales Manager Ken Kiel, worked with the Clifton, NJ FD on a milestone upgrade of their existing SCBA to a standardized fleet of 1997 edition Scott 4.5 SCBA. Now 11 years later, Ken has teamed up again with the Clifton FD to bring them the latest upgrades to their Scott SCBA. The Clifton FD has successfully upgraded their fleet of Scott SCBA to the Scott 4.5 Heavy Duty Wireframe 2007 Edition SCBA. The SCBA includes all new electronics, Heads-Up Display, and Pack Tracker Technology to aid and assist in locating a downed firefighter in the event of an emergency. Both purchases were made through a Federal AFG Grant which was awarded to the department.

Throughout the month of February, Ken held several interactive training sessions with Clifton Firefighters to train and familiarize them with the new additions and changes to their SCBA. The 2007 Edition SCBA has several similarities to their former SCBA; however, it also comes with several new additions, which can improve firefighter safety when implemented properly.

AAA Emergency looks forward to a continued working relationship with the Clifton FD and all of their members. Special thanks to Chief Vincent Colavitti, Deputy Chief Mike Allora, Deputy Chief Mike Sauer, and Captain Brett Blake.
