Greenwich FD & Sandy Aftermath

The Greenwich, CT Fire Department, like many other departments throughout the region, was extremely busy during the response Hurricane Sandy. However, there was one unique circumstance experienced by the Greenwich Fire Department in the aftermath of the storm.

During the storm Greenwich Fire Department operated at a series of large structure fires along the shoreline of their district. These fires occurred at the height of the storm, making fire suppression immediately complex. Due to extremely high winds and coastal flooding, fire department crews were drenched in sea water.

Afterwards, Fire Department officials made the decision to have all of the Scott
SCBA and Cylinders utilized during this incident thoroughly inspected and repaired if needed. In order to accomplish this Greenwich FD contacted AAA for loaner SCBA and the AAA Emergency team began their inspection to find signs of potentially serious damage to the SCBA from the salt water. All components of the SCBA were beginning to be negatively impacted and were cleaned, sanitized, and repaired as needed by the AAA team.
